Stephen Dent’s Advice for Putting a Little Green into Halloween!

October 28, 2011

Hello fellow Stephen Dent Planet Defenders! Thanks for taking a break from you busy schedule to check in with the Green Living Advice Blog. Fall has come and this weekend many people will be celebrating Halloween by carving pumpkins, passing out candy, and decorating their front lawns with scary monsters. Halloween is a fun holiday, and a favorite for most children, and there is no reason you can’t make this year’s Halloween a little more green! Read on planet defenders to find a few good tips from Stephen Dent on how to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle this Halloween.
1.) Get the most out of the pumpkin! When you carve your pumpkin, don’t just throw away all that pulp that you scrapped out from the inside, use it instead. You can clean and bake the seeds with some salt or other seasonings for a tasty and healthy snack. If you aren’t going to use the pulp to bake a yummy pumpking pie (if you want to use it for a pie but don’t have time, you can always freeze the pulp and use it later!), the pulp can be put in your garden or in your compost pile. Don’t have a compost? This is the perfect time to start one!
2.) Don’t throw out those old Halloween decorations! There is no point in buying and throwing away those Halloween decorations every year, its costly and wasteful. Instead, maybe invest in decorations that are a little nicer and worth saving, and in doing so, keep a little trash out of the dumps, and let mother earth breath a little easier. Also consider donating your old costume to a thrift store so someone else can enjoy it next year, or try to encorporate some of the material into your arts and craft projects, especially if you enjoy sewing. You can even make your own decorations out of other household products that you would otherwise have thrown away. Be creative! This is a great family activity and can help expand your consciousness!
3.) Use common sense! If it seems wasteful, don’t do it. There are so many ways to make any holiday green, even if the colors are black and orange. Trust you instincts and think outside the box. These tips are just a few thoughts from Stephen Dent, Planet Defender, but they are not the only ways to stay green this fall!
This is a beautiful time of year, with some parts of the country already having snowfall. Lets all work a little harder (and smarter!) to make sure our children and grandchildren get to enjoy the same beauty we see today.
