Stephen Dent’s Hot Button Issues

August 9, 2011

Good Day Planet Defenders!  Big things are happening in the world today, and with your continued support, we can keep changing the world!  Here are today’s hot button issues:

Global Warming

The debate rages amongst scientists about whether global warming is man made or a natural phenomenon.  Some scientists are claiming that global warming isn’t even happening, and others argue that if it is, it isn’t a big deal-global cooling would be far more dangerous.  I think we should be cautious of propaganda put out by oil and car corporations that have their financial security in mind, rather than the health of entire world.  Global warming is real, and whether we are causing it or not, we can help slow it down by reducing our carbon emissions, recycling, and making smarter decisions when it comes to wasting.  Only cook as much food as you can eat, grocery shop more regularly to avoid food going bad in the fridge, try not to buy products that use excessive packaging, and just generally use common sense when buying, using, and throwing away anything.

Vanishing Water Supplies

Most people don’t know, or refuse to acknowledge, that we are in a water crisis.  Currently we are using more water than can be replenished naturally, and there is no known way to artificially create water (and would we actually want to drink or use fake water?).  For nearly the last decade, water reservoirs have been refilling at only 80% of their maximum capacity, but we are continuing to use more water than ever.  There are easy ways to significantly reduce water consumption, and if enough of us use water wisely, we can start to make up for everyone that is wasting it.

DO NOT leave the water running when you are not using it.  This includes when brushing teeth, washing dishes, and gardening.

DO NOT water your lawn on days that it rains, especially don’t let the sprinklers run while it is already raining.

DO NOT run the dishwasher or washing machine if you don’t have a full load.

DO take short showers

DO use a water filter in your home, rather than buying water bottles
